The
Island of Scalpay "Rather I had thought of it as a place
of beauty so great as to distinguish it even among the long chain
of which each individual island is a brilliant jewel" Gavin
Maxwell - 'Harpoon at a Venture'.
Hirta
House enjoys an elevated position with sea views, spacious interior
and a high standard of decor. Resident's lounge and conservatory.
Master
bedroom available. Four poster and six foot Queen size beds and
all bedrooms are ensuite. There is an extensive library with a
wide range of antiquarian and modern books to browse.
Scalpay
is a thriving fishing community and the harbour is a hive of activity
during the day with boats in various stages of arrival and departure.
The
Shiant Isles lie ten miles off-shore. The islands have had an
increased media profile recently due to the publication of the
book "Sea Room" by the owner Adam Nicolson. Day trips
to the islands can be arranged in favourable weather. Porpoises,
seals and puffins can be seen on the journey.
On
the east coast of the island is Eilean Glas lighthouse which was
erected in 1788 and was the only lighthouse in the Western Isles
for many years. The lighthouse is now fully automated. The keepers
houses, which were built of Aberdeen Granite by Robert Louis Stevenson's
Grandfather, remain intact.
A
breathtaking view of the vista of the Isle of Skye, Uist and the
Mainland can be seen from the lighthouse.
