Sunderland of Scotland Springs into Junior Market

The Sunderland of Scotland newsletter Feb 1998

Sunderland of Scotland, the world's leading golf rainwear manufacturer, has recognised the ever increasing popularity of golf among youngsters by including a 'Junior' weatherbeater suit in their 1998 Spring collection.

The first of its kind worldwide, Sunderland's 'Junior' will consist of weatherbeater-style top and trousers, both cut to fit boys and girls from age nine upwards. The top will be available in five colours (Green Herringbone, Blue, Green, Red, or Black), with te trousers in Black.

As with all Sunderland of Scotland garments, the 'Junior' offers outstanding weather-proofing, comfort, playability and, of course, superb value for money. The weatherbeater has a lightweight, breathable hydrophillic liner, with a textured nylon outer and Teflon finish. For added comfort, the trousers come with elasticated waistband and drawstring.

"Since Tiger Woods hit he golf scene, youngsters all over the world have been taking up golf," comments Warren Sunderland, Chairman and Managing Director of Sunderland of Scotland.

"Quality waterproofs are at least as essential to children, who are developing their game, as adults. So our new junior suit marks a very exciting development for both Sunderland of Scotland and the game."

Spring '98 will also see Sunderland of Scotland launch a number of new garments for the more 'grown up' golfer, all combining the state-of-the art fabric technology, innovative design and expert hand-tailoring that has earned Glasgow-based Sunderland of Scotland a global reputation as manufacturers of the best golf rainwear in the world.

Sunderland's excellent range of versatile and comfortable weatherbeaters for men and women will be extended to include the new Dolphin Weatherbeater, a lightweight top offering excellent comfort and waterproofing.

Meanwhile, by Spring Sunderland will have phased in their revolutionary new soft, lightweight liner (previously only available in the President rainsuit) to the stylish Master Weatherbeater and the Ladies Cygnet Weatherbeater.

Also Sunderland's Classic range is to be extended with the introduction of two brand-new garments - the Classic Windshirt and Sleeveless Windshirt. Ideal for milder weather, they are both lightweight, shower-resistant and combine a soft-quiet Teflon treated microfibre outershell with a soft polyester liner.

All these new garrments are available golf and pro-shops throughout the UK from March. ISM Players Choose Sunderland

Sunderland of Scotland has been approached by the prestigious ISM stable of up-and-coming European stars to supply Playable Rainwear to their thirteen players.
"We are delighted to meet this request," comments Warren Sunderland, "particularly since the players themselves asked specifically for Sunderland of Scotland.
"Our garments are designed with the professional golfer in mind, combining supreme comfort and playablity with outstanding weather-resistance. So hopefully our rainsuits and weatherbeaters will contribute to the ongoing success of the stable.
"Also, it includes notable young players, such as Andrew Coltart, Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood who are all attracting considerable attention world-wide."
So far, the Master Weatherbeater with it's new soft outer, lightweight liner and eye-catching design is proving to be the favourite garment among the Stable, but it would appear that the entire range is favoured by the players. And, as Andrew Coltart commented at Eurogolf: "Sunderland's products are very light and they are excellent for tour conditions."

Tom to Retire

From March Tom Jenkinson, Sunderland's representative in the north-west of England, will retire after twenty-two years in the trade.
"Well known throughout the local golfing community, Tom has served all our customers superbly," says Sales Director Stanley Segal. "I am confident that these high standards will be maintained by Dave Watkinson who will take over the territory.

Dave Watkinson, who will replace Tom Jenkinson as Sunderland of Scotland's representative in the north-west of England in March.

"My only concern, however, is that when Tom goes, our clients in the north of England will begin to see double," continues Stan. "Dave is the identical twin brother of Brian Watkinson, our representative in the North East!"

Swedish Deal

Sunderland of Scotland have announced a new agreement with Pro-Quality of Sweden, which will see the company supply the full product range to pro shops throughout Sweden.
"We are delighted to welcome Pro-Select to our family of golf professionals," comments Warren Sunderland.

Congratulations to Sunderland's Principal Staff Professional, Seve Ballesteros and the entire European Ryder Cup Team on their stunning victory amidst those adverse weather conditions at Valderrama!

European Markets Grow

The Golf Europe show in Munich proved to be a roaring success for Sunderland of Scotland.
A record number of people attended Sunderland's stand, reflecting the increasing popularity of Sunderland garments throughout Europe.
"The reception given to the product range was very exciting," comments Sales Director Stanley Segal, "and I am certain that our new team of representatives in Germany will take full advantage of this great response."
John Naumann, Jeremy Dunwoody and Ian Adam have been appointed Sunderland of Scotland agents for North Germany, South Germany and North West Germany respectively.
"These appointments will further develop and improve our representation on the Continent," continues Stan, "and will particularly enhance our commitment to customer service."
Next year, Sunderland brand awareness throughout Europe will also be enhanced by a comprehensive press advertising campaign.

Universal Success for New Range

Since it's September launch, Sunderland of Scotland's 1997/98 range has enjoyed universal acclaim.
The new Classic has exceeded all expectations, and the new Master Weatherbeater and President Rainsuit are also enjoying considerable success.
"Overall, our production levels are up 25%, and demand is so high we are now taking on more staff," comments Warren Sunderland.
"At first we did encounter a few glitches on the delivery side, but I am now pleased to report that our deliveries are very much improved and back on track.
" Plus the customers seem to love the new range, as the following e-mail demonstrates."

Last weekend I had occasion to play a round of golf in the sort of conditions that only enthusiasts or mad people go out in.
Rain that was akin to all the Power Showers in the world being turned on together in full 'sport mode' and cascading down upon my head; hailstones so big that at times we were unable to know which object on the green we should be putting ; and the wind so strong it would corkscrew an umbrella - assuming I had been able to open it up.
During all this madness I wore my new Sunderland Classic Rainsuit to protect me and protect it did. After four hours of the worst conditions I have ever played in I was perfectly dry and warm. Not a drop of moisture had passed through to my clothes underneath and the perspiration one would normally expect to cope with just wasn't there.
I cannot congratulate your company and the people who produced the garment highly enough. Obtaining an article that not only does the job the manufacturer says it will but exceeds all expectation is all too rare an occurrence.
Congratulations on a fine product - I am certainly a fan of yours for life and I hope many others (as I am sure they must) join me and expand your fortunes.

John Bateman
A well-satisfied customer.

Presidential Liner Sails Ahead

Following the outstanding success of the new President rainsuit, Sunderland of Scotland have announced their intention to phase-in the President's revolutionary new soft-liner to the Master and Cygnet Weatherbeaters.
Designed exclusively for Sunderland of Scotland, the new liner was introduced to the high performance President rainsuit at the launch of the 1997/98 range in September.
"The President always was one of our most popular rainsuits with tour professionals," explains Chairman and Managing Director Warren Sunderland. "So it was the ideal garment to introduce the new liner."
Soft-to-the-touch, the liner's hydrophilic membrane offers outstanding weather resistance and breathablity. Plus, it is superbly lightweight which, combined with the hand-tailored cut and exclusivedesign, makes a tremendous difference especially in tour conditions.
"Since we launched the new President, the response from professionals has been terrific continues Warren.
"I am delighted that the President's new liner is performing at least as well as we expected, even more so as this significant upgrade was made without increasing the garment price."
The new liner is currently being phased into the stylish Cygnet and Master Weatherbeaters.
